The Kentucky Council of Teachers of English/Language Arts, Inc. is an incorporated non-profit, service organization for Kentucky English and Language Arts teachers of all levels (Kindergarten-Graduate School). KCTE/LA has been recognized by the National Council of Teachers of English as one of the more active state affiliates.

Your art must  be vertical and 8 1/2 by 11 in size. 

Student can take a picture of their artwork or send it as a document.. Apple products and software are not available to most teachers- please make sure your entry can be submitted as a doc or PDF or a JPEG. 

It must include the following: 

- Artwork that depicts the theme through the lens of Literacy

- The Name The KY Council of Teachers of English/Language Arts and  KCTE/LA

- The name of the Issue Theme - See: http://kcte.org/publication/kentucky-english-bulletin/  for our current call for Manuscripts. **

- The General Date (month and year) 

(**Note that we hope to award more than one art work as we proceed through the year since we produce 2 issues a year plus an additional student writing issue- all of which are open for possible student artwork for our front cover on a professional education journal! Due to this- students might focus on literacy as a focus or student writing as a focus so as to meet possible future themes not yet selected or to meet our student writing issue that comes out in December. ) 

- It must be the student's original work and it is the teacher's responsibility to get permission from both the student and  their parent to publish the artwork, and to secure that permission if ever needed. 


Please note that the deadline for submissons is May 30 2019- however, we are looking for artwork or our covers as early as March of this year- so submit those artistic covers and rememer to keep the focus on Literacy. 

The student need not send the actual artwork unless they choose to. You can take a quality picture of your front cover art or upload the original artwork itself- we cannot guarantee formatting and such that might keep the artwork from being used as a cover.

Each year, KCTE/LA recognizes teachers at the Elementary, Middle Grades, High School, and College level who excel in their duties as teachers, mentors to students, and as teacher-leaders in their buildings, districts and beyond. The winning teachers, one at each grade level, will receive a plaque, a free one-year membership to KCTE/LA, and recognition at this year’s conference.
Each year, KCTE/LA recognizes an administrator (district or school level) who excels in promoting teacher leadership and learning in English and Language Arts. The winning administrator will receive a plaque, a free one-year membership to KCTE/LA, and recognition at this year’s conference.
KCTE/LA sponsors a writing contest at the Elementary, Middle, High School, and College levels in with winners in first through fifth place in the following four categories:
  1. Narrative/Real or Imagined
  2. Informative/Explanatory
  3. Opinion/Argumentative
  4. Poetry

In October of 2005 Stephanie Kirk, KCTE/LA past president, NCTE Liaison, and dear friend, was killed in a car accident.  Supporting KCTE/LA and educating the students of Kentucky were two of Stephanie’s passions.  In honor of Stephanie Kirk, the board has established the Stephanie Kirk Classroom Learning Award, which KCTE/LA will award every year to a Kentucky teacher. 

WHO CAN APPLY?

Any teacher of English/language arts who is a member of the KCTE/LA but not on the board may apply.

WHAT DOES THE AWARD PROVIDE?

The award will provide $500.00 (to be used in the classroom), the registration fee for the KCTE/LA conference held in February, and complimentary hotel accommodations during the KCTE/LA conference. 

WHAT IS EXPECTED OF THE RECIPIENT?

The winner of the award must present the results of the project at the KCTE/LA conference in February of the following year. 

WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF THE AWARD?

The purpose is to promote the teaching of reading/writing in classrooms in Kentucky and to honor former board member Stephanie Kirk.  Any innovative project which encourages attainable improvement in the language arts areas may qualify. 

HOW WILL SELECTION BE MADE?

A committee made up of KCTE/LA board members will select the application which best promotes student improvement in an innovative and attainable manner. 

WHEN WILL THE SELECTION BE ANNOUNCED?

The winning applicant will be notified in writing by January 5, 2017. 

WHAT MUST BE DONE TO APPLY?

To apply, one must complete the application form and return to the address on the application form prior to the deadline. 

WHEN IS THE DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSION?

Submissions for the award will be accepted until November 1, 2016.
The Gretchen Niva Service Award is given each year to an outstanding proponent of English/Language Arts and literacy. It is not required that this recipient be a classroom teacher.
