Each year, KCTE/LA recognizes an administrator (district or school level) who excels in promoting teacher leadership and learning in English and Language Arts. The winning administrator will receive a plaque, a free one-year membership to KCTE/LA, and recognition at this year’s conference.
The Gretchen Niva Service Award is given each year to an outstanding proponent of English/Language Arts and literacy. It is not required that this recipient be a classroom teacher.
In October of 2005 Stephanie Kirk, KCTE/LA past president, NCTE Liaison, and dear friend, was killed in a car accident.  Supporting KCTE/LA and educating the students of Kentucky were two of Stephanie’s passions.  In honor of Stephanie Kirk, the board has established the Stephanie Kirk Classroom Learning Award, which KCTE/LA will award every year to a Kentucky teacher.

Any teacher of English/language arts who is a member of the KCTE/LA but not on the board may apply.

The award will provide $500.00 (to be used in the classroom), the registration fee for the KCTE/LA conference held in February, and complimentary hotel accommodations during the KCTE/LA conference.

The winner of the award must present the results of the project at the KCTE/LA conference in February of the following year.

The purpose is to promote the teaching of reading/writing in classrooms in Kentucky and to honor former board member Stephanie Kirk.  Any innovative project which encourages attainable improvement in the language arts areas may qualify.

A committee made up of KCTE/LA board members will select the application which best promotes student improvement in an innovative and attainable manner.

The winning applicant will be notified in writing by January 5, 2017.

To apply, one must complete the application form and return to the address on the application form prior to the deadline.

Submissions for the award will be accepted until November 1, 2016.
